Coconut pecan frosting for German chocolate cake
Making a homemade coconut pecan frosting for a German chocolate cake is admittedly time consuming but the results are unbeatable. The German chocolate frosting out of a can is a weak substitute for the real thing.
Although this frosting is amazingly good, it is easily one of the least attractive substances in the dessert world. It is a lumpy grainy brown goo, but once you taste it, you will not hesitate to gobble it down.
Recipe ingredients:
3 egg yolks
1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-1/3 cups flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
Use a 2-quart saucepan, and add the milk and egg yolks. Beat the eggs into the evaporated milk and then turn on medium heat. Add sugar, butter, and vanilla. Stirring occasionally cook the frosting for about 12 minutes until it is thick. Once the frosting is thickened, turn off heat and stir in coconut and chopped pecans. If you want to add more coconut and pecans than specified in this recipe, go for it. This will create a chunkier and nuttier frosting instead of a creamier one. Make the frosting the consistency that you desire.
You can spread this frosting immediately on your cake. The time spent on this frosting will be well worth the effort.
